Koala Retreat is an organisation dedicated to supporting koalas both in the wild and in captivity.

Our work includes:

  • Providing koalas with ongoing support and care;
  • Creating new food sources;
  • Protecting and reducing the risk of disease;
  • Preventing inter-breeding which weakens their gene pool;
  • Ensuring koalas can survive severe weather conditions;
  • Educating the local community on koala awareness.

Here at Koala Retreat we believe that with proper planning and infrastructure, we can provide a more positive future for koalas using captive management practices that can be applied to the conservation and protection of wild koala populations.

With today’s busy lifestyle and increasing urban development projects around Australia, the koala is being pushed into extinction. Roads and highways are potential death traps for the koala, while dogs and cats become predators, climate change and population growth are changing landscapes, and humans unknowingly reduce the freedom of the koala’s behaviour through their own lifestyle. All this adds up to unnecessary pressure on the koala, which wreaks havoc on the koala’s overall health and immune system.

Koala Retreat is committed to ensuring that Australia’s wild koala populations are equipped with the tools to survive in the 21st century.

We do this by:

  • Using locally-sourced and sustainable natural resources
  • Understanding koalas’ relationship with Eucalyptus
  • Combining business practices with ethical tourism to support koala protection and awareness;
  • Applying successful captive koala solutions to wild populations;
  • Creating job opportunities, training and long-term employment;
  • Providing education about koala conservation.
